Welcome to my website! My name is Kirsty Applebaum. I’m the author of The Middler and winner of the United Agents Prize for Most Promising Writing for Young People 2016.
You can scroll down to find information about me, my writing and my latest news & events - and if you scroll far enough there's an embarrassing photo of me on a kangaroo.
About The Middler
Eleven-year-old Maggie lives in Fennis Wick, enclosed and protected from the outside world by a boundary, beyond which the Quiet War rages and the dirty, dangerous wanderers roam.
Her brother Jed is an eldest, revered and special. A hero. Her younger brother is Trig – everyone loves Trig. But Maggie’s just a middler; invisible and left behind. Then, one hot September day, she meets Una, a hungry wanderer girl in need of help, and everything Maggie has ever known gets turned on its head.
I was born in Essex and grew up in Hampshire. I’ve had a wide variety of jobs including bookselling, railway re-signalling, picking stones off conveyor belts and teaching Pilates. I now live with my husband on top of a hill in Winchester, not far from the butterfly fields that influenced the setting of The Middler

The Middler is ideal for teaching to children aged 9+. It is particularly suited to developing literacy and writing skills, and stimulating PHSE discussion around themes of self-doubt, belonging, lies and loyalty.
